Your New Job:
The EHS Project Engineer ensures environmental, health, and safety compliance across pharmaceutical manufacturing and R&D operations. This role integrates EHS principles into engineering projects, supports regulatory compliance, and drives continuous improvement in safety and sustainability practices. The position requires strong technical expertise in high-hazard programs, chemical management, construction and contractor EHS management within highly regulated environments.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Project Support & Integration
Integrate EHS requirements into capital projects, facility upgrades, and process changes.
Conduct Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSRs) and ensure closure of EHS-related actions prior to commissioning.
Perform field walkdowns to identify hazards and verify engineering controls.
Support criticality assessments for equipment, utilities, and processes impacting safety and compliance.
Ensure engineering controls (e.g., LEV, isolators, interlocks) are designed and implemented effectively.
Support PHA and other PSM related assessments.
Support PSDP and PSCS responsibilities to ensure compliance under the role of the client.
Technical EHS Expertise
Lead development and implementation of High Hazard Programs (e.g., Construction Safety, ATEX, Process Safety Management).
Support Biosafety programs including containment strategy validation.
Support Hazardous Waste and Chemical Inventory systems in compliance with pharmaceutical regulations.
Schedule and coordinate Industrial Hygiene Monitoring (air sampling, noise, exposure assessments).
Support Machine Safety and LOTO programs for equipment installations and maintenance.
Regulatory Compliance
Ensure compliance with EHS regulations including HSA and EPA.
Implementation of Construction, Machinery and other EHS Regulations.
Prepare for and support regulatory inspections and audits.
Safety & Environmental Programs
Develop and maintain assigned EHS programs and provide support for other programmes.
Lead incident investigations and implement corrective/preventive actions.
Conduct internal audits and support external inspections.
Training & Communication
Deliver technical EHS training to projects, engineering, operations, and laboratory staff.
Promote safety culture through awareness campaigns and toolbox talks.
Documentation & Reporting
Maintain EHS documentation including risk assessments, SOPs, and change control records.
Track and report EHS KPIs including near misses, project status, RAMS and PTW.
Stakeholder Engagement
Collaborate with Engineering, Quality, and Operations to ensure alignment on EHS goals.
Participate in cross-functional teams for process improvement and sustainability initiatives.
What are we looking for?
Experience:
Minimum 5 years of EHS experience in pharmaceutical, biotech, medical device or chemical manufacturing environments supporting projects/operations.
Proven experience supporting capital projects, facility upgrades, and equipment installations with EHS integration.
Demonstrated involvement in GMP-regulated operations and cleanroom environments.
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a related technical discipline.
Advanced degree (MSc, MEng) preferred for complex pharmaceutical environment.
ATEX/Machinery or PSM-specific training/certification is a plus.
Technical Skills:
Proficient with Construction Safety and associated regulations and requirements.
Working knowledge of Process Safety Management (PSM) principles and implementation.
Experience conducting Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSRs) and criticality assessments for new equipment and systems.
Proficient in field walkdowns, hazard identification, and verification of engineering controls.
Familiarity with gas safety and chemical management and compliance.
Working knowledge in industrial hygiene monitoring (e.g., air sampling, noise).
Experience managing hazardous waste, chemical inventories, and environmental permitting.
Knowledge of machine safety, LOTO, and Permit to Work systems.
Ability to conduct and document EHS inspections, audits, and incident investigations.
